Baobab

Baobab grows a living tree from a city's data. Its branches show New Yorkers by origin, by the languages they speak at home, or by country of birth (or your own data): each group's roots run along real city streets to the districts where its people live, and the moving lights are its people going about New York's day.

Moving lights: groups of people making the day's trips at New York time, at real walking, cycling, driving, bus and subway speeds. Rings on the map: each district's groups, nested by size (area = people). Every group in the data has a leaf and a light, however few its people.
